Clobber Passages PDF Print E-mail
Written by Carrie Gibson

There are 8 Bible passages that are commonly used by some to condemn gays. These are commonly referred to the “clobber passages” because without any sense of accountability to the Word of God themselves, they feel compelled to “clobber” other people with what they see as “obvious truth,” because it’s obvious to them – not having a real stake in the matter. They consider the meaning of these passages to be obvious, because they have never really spent any time thinking about them or the implications of their own conclusions. Of these eight, only six are still used with any regularity as two have been accepted widely as not pertaining to homosexuality. Please note that we are launching a New BIBLE STUDY on August 1st which will be an in-depth study on WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY SAYS ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY. I hope you'll join us.

There are four passages in the Old Testament:
  • Genesis 19:1-5
  • Leviticus 18:22
  • Leviticus 20:13
  • Deuteronomy 23:17

There are four in the New Testament:
  • 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
  • 1 Timothy 1:9-10
  • Romans 1:21-31
  • Jude 1:6-7

The two that have been widely discarded are Deuteronomy 23:17 and Jude 1:6-7.

It is important to understand what God is teaching through these passages because every word in the Bible is meant for our teaching, correction and reproof (2 Timothy 3:16).

It is also important to note that these passages were written in Hebrew and Greek and later translated into English (King James Version - 1610.) The English that it was translated into is very different than the English we speak today. That very difference is a testimony as to how much can be misunderstood, or lost in translation from another language and through the course of time. Most cannot even read with clarity The Federalist Papers which were written at the founding of our nation by Alexander Hamilton – just 200 years ago. Bear this in mind. Additionally, a look at church history will teach that, horror of horrors, greed, graft and power-hungry folks have been known to be at the helm of churches. Much of what we understand today from the scripture was determined during this period of history by these same folks. Ignorance and political jockeying was the norm for the day. A true inspection of the scripture has led us in modern times to throw off many of these imposed views to find a true and faithful God. I believe the Word to be inerrant - don't misunderstand me, but many of those who have wielded it have not wielded it anointed by the Holy Spirit or empowered by love.

Also remember that the subject matter is one which is confusing; it is something 90% of the population has no experience with, no reference point for. Because human kind tends to embark on the path of least resistance, since it didn’t pertain to them, it was simply easier to decide these passages meant one thing, and never have delved deeper to see if their conclusion was right or wrong. They simply went on to things they cared about, not caring that their false assumptions might be wreaking havoc unnecessarily. Or, they are mean-spirited, hateful people who must oppress someone. There are always those.

Why Law Can't Work PDF Print E-mail

Let go and let God. That's the theme of this writing. Joyce Meyer is one of my favorite Christian speakers. She is dedicated to offering practical advice and Christian council to a lost world. She is an author as well as a speaker. I quote from one of her books below and comment because what she wrote is to the point, and clear. Additionally, it adds creedence to true Christian principles. These basics of Christianity seem to be swept under the rug when the topic of homosexuality comes up! It is my contention, however, that if they are true Christian principles, then they are true Christian principles.

What about the Old Testament Law and Gays? PDF Print E-mail

Though it is a favorite mantra of those who condemn the LGBT community, it is important for everyone to understand that inherit in the Gospel text is the reality that all have sinned. It is important for those who condemn, because they choose to withhold from a singular group of people the same grace and forgiveness they themselves stand on. It is important for the LGBT community to know the truth of the Gospel which sets us free - free to be loved by this God that the church so loudly proclaims hates us.

In Romans 3 Paul is discussing the difference between Jews and Gentiles. You see in there day, Gays were not the political issue of the day. The issue of the day was Gentiles, which is anyone not Jewish. That's a log of people! In fact, it includes almost anyone who names the name of Christ today. Most Jewish people reject Christ as the Messiah, thinking the Messiah has not yet shown up. Most of the modern church is made up of Gentiles who were allowed into the Church during Paul's lifetime. Peter was used by God to bring in the Gentiles - which made everyone in the Jewish Church, which was the Church then, angry. But when he told them how it had happened, that God had given him a vision, did miracles and poured out the Holy Spirit and just plain so much as TOLD PETER to include them, the Church let them in. Much of the New Testament is addressing this issue. Either the Jews are being addressed about not making the Gentiles live by the Law, because the relationship afforded us through Jesus Christ is a gift, not something we EARN by our own actions. Other sections address the Gentiles explaining to them how to live for Christ.

Following is an article that addresses the so-called ex-gay ministry. Please note that according to this article even those involved in this ministry don't expect change to actually happen. Read it carefully. Their perspective is that actions can be modified. Agreed. People can exist in many imposed and artificial environments. Think of POW's, prisoners, those subjected to concentration camps. Just because people CAN live in artificially contrived situations, does not in any way lend itself to the conclusion that the imposed lifestyle is the more natural.
